Excerpt from The Christian Annual: For the Year of Our Lord; 1917

Said the editor to the foreman, the "Annual" must be printed,
And the foreman Blandly smiled and said, that fact has oft been hinted;
But the time has come when hints won't do, the copy must be ready
And then we all will go to work, and at it keep right steady
Until every word has found its place in all the printed pages,
When all of us shall fondly hope for an increase in our wages;
For of all the trying stuff to set that printers have undertaken,
That non-pareil of them report, is the most difficult of makin'.
And so the editor went to work to secure the proper matter,
And he wrote, and wrote, and wrote again, before some folks would answer;
But by and by the report came in, though some were late and meager,
But nothing loth, all went to work, for all were then quite eager;
Stenographer, lineotyper, proof-reader, foreman - all,
The make-up man, and all the rest, the great ones and the small
Put in their time throughout the day, and some worked in the night
That the "Christian Annual" might come out, and in time and dress be right.
So here it is with all its faults, its errors, and its merits,
The fruit of many an anxious hour, and labor without credits;
But if to you this "Annual" a little help shall be,
The editor and all the rest who worked so faithfully,
Shall be content and feel well paid
For every little deed they've done, and every word they've said.
But before this page shall go to print and be given you to read,
The editor would thank each one for every kindly deed;
He would not forget the writer - Jedekiah - as you known,
Nor would he slight old Uncle Sid, my friend of long ago;
And so I, old Jedekiah, and he, old Uncle Sid,
Shall toil along together as the Master may us bid,
And when life's sun shall rise for us upon the golden shore,
Together we shall rest awhile, where "Annuals" are no more.
