Our period is characterised by the disintegration of artistic and creative principles. The delineation between commercial and artistic works becomes more and more blurred. Instead of concentrating on one discipline it is not unusual to mix different genres such as photography, music and contemporary art establishing new relationships that open up unknown and interesting views on life. Mario Schmolka s photographs demonstrate this new trend. Looking at his pictures makes us realise how true eroticism is effected by projection and how insinuation, gestures and disguise trigger much more than explicit nakedness. It is exactly this principle Mario has made the leitmotif of his erotic photography. Mario Schmolka - whose origins lie in the fashion and beauty photography - changes confidently between different styles, making this his own. He masterfully handles artificial glamour and manages just as well to catch spontaneous and vibrant moments. Nor does he shy away from the depiction of realistic imperfection. His openness to accept apparent ambiguity lends his work such a broad spectrum of expression. For the photographs in this book Mario has cultivated one principle in his work in particular. He opened up the borders between fashion, beauty and nude photography and allowed his models to give the images their own interpretation. It is very important to him that the women in his pictures can present themselves in the way they feel. Mario deliberately withdraws so as not to dominate the collaboration between model and photographer. The result are intensive, mysterious pictures with an oscillating mixture of style, eroticism and personal expression - pictures Mario Schmolka himself calls "intimate portraits".
