The kingdom is divided into 16 provinces, of which Basilicata and Capitanata are the lar est, and Abruzzo Citra and the Provincia di Napoli the smallest. T 6 population bears no proportion to the super ficial extent of each province, the natural conformation of the country and various local Circumstances combining to increase it in some and to diminish it in others. The number of inhabitants was estimated in 1788 at on the Ist Jan. 1853, they amounted to of whom were males, and were females; and in 1861 to including the annexed Papal possessions of Pontecorvo and Benevento. In the returns for 1840, when the entire popula tionwas the following Classification of the trades and pro fessions of the adult population is given secular clergyman; monks; nuns; civil and military Officers 5981 persons engaged in public instruction; 7920 lawyers; physicians merchants artists; artisans; agriculturists; shepherds; and seamen. By the same returns it appears that the births in 1839 amounted to vi'z. Boys and girls and the deaths to viz. Men and women. Among the latter were 37 persons upwards Of 100 years of age men and 22 women. The number of foundlings received in 1850 in the hos itals of the kingdom, exclusive of Sicily, amounted to 2791 boys an 2639 girls. The deaths in the same hospitals during the year amounted to 1334 boys and 1319 girls. The annexed table shows the distribution Of the population by pro vinces, on the Ist Jan. 1861, with the Chief towns Of each, and the dis tricts (di'stretti) into which they are divided.
