Excerpt from The Saints Everlasting Rest, or a Treatise on the Blessed State of the Saints in Their Enjoyment of God in Glory

No man mutt look for more from duty than God hath laid upon it and fo much we may and mutt look for. 3. If I {hould quote all the fcriptures that plainly prove this, lfhould tranfcribe a great part of the Bible: I will therefore only delire you to findy what tolerable interpretation can be given of the following places, which will prove that life and falvation may be. Yea, mull be the end of duty. John iv. 40, Ye will not come to me, that ye might have life. Matt. Xi. 1 a, The kingdom of heaven fuli'ereth violence, and the violent take it by force. Luke xiii. 24, Strive to enter in at the lirait gate. Phil. Ii. 12, Work out your falvation with fear and trembling. Rom. Ii. 7, to, To them who by patient continuance in wellodoing, feck for glory, and honour, and immortality, eternal life. Glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good. 1 Cor. Ix. 24, So run that ye may obtain. 2 Tim. Ri.'u, If we fufl'er with him we {hall reign with him. 1 Tim. Vi. 12, Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life. I Tim.' vi. 8, 19, That they do good works, laying up a good foundation againtl the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life. Rev. Oxxii. 14, Bleffed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right'to the tree of life, and enter in by the gates into the city. Matt. Xxv. 34. 35, 36, Come, ye blefl'ed of my Father, inherit, &c. For I was an hungered,and ye, &c. Luke xi. 28, blelied are they that hear the word of God, and keep it. Yea, the efcaping of hell is a right end of duty to a believer. Heb. Iv. 1, Let us fear, left a promife being left us of entering into his relt, any of you lhould come firm: of it. Luke xii. 5, Fear him that is able to deflroy both foul and body 1n hell Yea, [whatfoever Others fay,] I fay unto you, fear him. Cor. Ix. 27, I keep under my body, and bring it into fubjeetion left, when Ihave preached to others, I myfelf lhould be a call-away. Multitudes of fcriptures and fcripture-arguments might be brought, but thefe may fuflice to any w believe the Scriptures. 4. For thofe that think thi 'reit may be our end, but not our ultimate end: that mull: be God's glory only: Lwill not gainfay them. Only let them confider,. What God hath joined, man muft not feparate. The glorifying himfelf, and the faving of his people.
