'Horrockses Fashions: Off-the-Peg Style in the '40s and '50s' was one of most respected ready-to-wear labels of the late 1940s and 1950s. Founded in 1946, it concentrated on the production of quality women's wear, beach clothes, housecoats and, later, children's wear. Although produced in considerable quantities from the start, the firm maintained an air of exclusivity for the brand with an emphasis on good quality fabrics, especially cotton, custom-designed patterns and fashion styling with Parisian couture overtones. The clothes had a distinctive look and were famous for their colourful cotton floral prints which were made into full-skirted summer dresses. The company worked closely with artists like Eduardo Paolozzi and Graham Sutherland to produce designs for its fabrics. 'Horrockses Fashions: Off-the-Peg Style in the '40s and '50s' draws together fashion photography, archival material, personal stories and beautiful dresses to tell the story of the company, its role on the post-war British high street and the relationship between couture and ready-to-wear in this period.
