Architecture s capacity for communication has made it a powerful tool in conveying a company s corporate identity. Throughout history, institutions (normally religious) and governments have constructed large and ostentatious buildings as a way of showing their power. Corporate architecture proliferated significantly during the past century, particularly from the 1980s onward. Through this aspect of design, many companies publicized their growth and shored up their identity at the same time. Manhattan was a clear example of the phenomenon. Today, these types of buildings have been evolving into new ways of understanding architecture as an element of identity while bearing in mind the environment, as architects seek to integrate workplace aesthetics and designs to respond to the new needs of employees. Work models have changed radically since the previous century. With the evolution of technology and the computerization of processes, manual work has been replaced in the majority of cases by computer programs that almost fully automate tasks. These advances have encouraged the move toward work more closely related with knowledge, where communication, cooperation and the exchange of ideas are fundamental and replace more mechanical tasks. It has therefore been compulsory to completely overhaul the office concept in order to deliver on these new needs. From both the architectural and interior-design points of view, the idea has been to try to modify a space to contribute to communication. The design of spacious, bright and aesthetically pleasing workplaces gets a boost from the planning of various spaces, in some cases fun and colorful, where workers can meet, toss ideas around and give free rein to their creativity. In short, contemporary corporate architecture has become another element of a company s identity, achieved through the cooperation of several disciplines such as visual communication, marketing and graphic design, among many others. The sustainability aspect is increasingly present in this type of architecture, which is incorporating different elements to reduce environmental impacts, particularly in relation to the type of materials used in construction.
